Professor Sang Kyu Kim has conducted pioneering and highly original research in molecular spectroscopy and reaction dynamics, playing a major role in elevating experimental physical chemistry in Korea to world-class standing.
His laboratory has independently developed and constructed novel experimental apparatus and methodologies, continually opening new areas of research into the microscopic dynamics of chemical reactions that were difficult to access with existing methods.
He has made significant advances in experimentally elucidating the multidimensional structure of the conical intersection, a core concept in the quantum-mechanical understanding of chemical reactions, and its role in nonadiabatic dynamics. These findings have gained international academic recognition and have been featured in numerous authoritative books in the field. By experimentally resolving the competing predissociation pathways near the conical intersection, he provided new insights into nonadiabatic reaction dynamics at conical intersections. He has also expanded anion research into the realm of ultrafast dynamics, pioneering a new area of anion reaction dynamics focused on how excess electrons influence molecular structure and reactivity.
Professor Kim's scholarly achievements and international standing are reflected in his numerous invited lectures at major international conferences, as well as his active service on the editorial boards of international journals and the organizing committees of international conferences. Most recently, his selection for the Morino Lectureship, a prestigious and long-established honor in the field of molecular science, has once again affirmed his scholarly accomplishments and international contributions.
