Professor Wonyong Choi has dedicated himself to developing technology related to photocatalysts, key materials for solar energy conversion. He has comprehensively researched photocatalyst development and the resulting applications in energy and environmental fields. He has systematically produced and modified metal-oxide-based and carbon-nitride-based photocatalysts using various methods, and has developed relevant application technologies that simultaneously address energy and environmental issues. For these efforts, he has been recognized as an international leader in this field of research.
Notably, Professor Choi has remarkable accomplishments in environmental functional photocatalytic material technology. They include development of visible light-responsive photocatalysts for environmental purification that dramatically enhance the decomposition of organic pollutants by generating OH radicals under visible light; development of various photocatalyst modification and efficiency improvement methods; creation of titanium dioxide nanotube photocatalyst filters for air purification, and development of photosynthesis technology that produces hydrogen peroxide using only water and air as raw materials.
Professor Choi has published 375 SCI papers, garnering over 57,800 citations and an H-index of 111(WOS). As the first or corresponding author, he has published 248 papers with over 30,000 citations, averaging 121 citations per paper, and significantly influencing research and researchers in related fields.
Furthermore, he is a world-renowned engineer who has been selected as one of the "Highly Cited Researchers" for five consecutive years since 2019. For his expertise in photocatalyst research and international leadership, he was chosen as the first and only Korean to serve as the Editor-in-Chief of an ACS journal. In 2024, he was elected as an international member of the National Academy of Engineering (USA), which honor further elevates the standing of Korea's scientific and technological community.
