TAK Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony to Expand Future Growth Engines IT Films and Aramid Fiber

2024. 10. 23

On October 23, Toray Advanced Materials Korea(TAK) held a groundbreaking ceremony to expand production facilities for its future growth engines, IT Films Unit 13 and 14 and Aramid Fiber Unit 2, at its Gumi 5 plant in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

More than 200 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including Yoo Beop-min, director of investment policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Koichi Mizushima, special ambassador to Japan in Korea, Lee Chul-woo, governor of North Gyeongsang Province, and Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho, and Akihiro Nikkaku, Chairman of Toray, Lee Young-kwan, president of TAK, and CEO Kim Young-seop.

The IT film production line, which will be expanded this time, will be expanded at Gumi Plant 5 with an annual capacity of 300 million square meters, and will focus on producing and supplying MLCC release films.

When the expansion is completed in the second half of 2026, the supply scale of MLCC release films of TAK will be 900 million square meters per year, including existing lines.

MLCC is expected to grow at an annual rate of 10% by 2030 due to high performance of IT devices and electrical equipment of automobiles, and TAK, which has the world's best technology in MLCC release film, plans to actively respond to demand expansion based on high quality and stable supply capacity.

TAK, which has the world's largest polyester film supply capacity, plans to further solidify its position as a unique high-functioning high-tech film maker with this expansion and contribute to the development of the IT industry by developing innovative next-generation products based on a consistent production system ranging from polymerization to polyester film and high-order processing.

TAK, which produces meta-aramid, will expand Unit 2 with an annual capacity of 3,000 tons to the Gumi Plant 1 with a goal of operating in mid-2025, and when completed, it will secure a supply capacity of 5,400 tons per year.

The meta-aramid fiber market, which has excellent heat resistance and electrical insulation, is expected to grow 5% annually by 2030, and aramid fibers made of TAK are applied to high-function heat-resistant clothing, electric vehicles, and ultra-high-voltage transformers with uniform quality and excellent electrical and thermal characteristics by applying dry spinning methods in the world.

In particular, through this expansion, it plans to contribute to environmental protection by expanding the supply of original yarn that does not require a dyeing process, as well as lead the global high-tech textile industry by utilizing supply chains owned by Toray Group and developing its own technology.

President Kim Young-seop said, "We will continue to expand future growth engines through continuous research and development and investment expansion," adding, "We will make more efforts to develop the national economy and revitalize the local economy."

Meanwhile, TAK has been actively investing and M&A by expanding its super engineering plastic PPS resin and high-strength fiber carbon fiber production facilities last year and newly entering the secondary battery separation membrane and water treatment O&M business.
