Award-winning achievements

Professor Jongbeom Baek has developed many innovative methods that enable chemical, structural and functional control of two-dimensional electron-conjugated materials, such as graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC). His outstanding achievements and contributions include transferring related technologies to relevant industries.

In addition, he developed the world’s first ball-milling technology, based on which he proposed the easy and simple manufacturing of high-quality graphene as well as selective edge functionalization. Moreover, he developed an eco-friendly ammonia production technology that offset the shortcomings of the existing production process of ammonia, a key raw material for hydrogen energy, by synthesizing ammonia in a simple process under mild reaction conditions at low temperatures and atmospheric pressure, which leads to a yield that is three times higher than that of the existing method. This breakthrough technology was published in Nature Nanotechnology.

Professor Baek has published more than 20 research papers on novel graphene production methods in internationally recognized scientific journals, on top of patenting his research technology. A world-class researcher who has contributed to the advancement of Korean science, he has been selected as one of ‘the most influential researchers in the world’ for four years since 2018.
